THANKS to Heather Morton of Wool who recently inherited this photograph of her grandad Edward Amey, who fought in the First World War.
Edward, originally from East Morden, near Bere Regis, is photographed alongside his friend George Whitfield, from the Devon and Dorset Regiment whom he stayed in touch with for a few years after the war.
They both sailed to South Africa on a British ship and into Bombay.
They ended up in Khartoum and Edward became the owner of a monkey named Biddy for a while, which he bought for company.
Heather recalls: “My granddad always used to talk about hearing a woman singing when they pulled into port.
“He said to me ‘I’ve been over the world but there’s no place quite like Dorset’.
“He used to say that some of the sights he saw weren’t very nice, he’d say ‘it wasn’t a war, it was more of a bloodbath’.”
In his latter years Edward lived in Hamworthy, Poole. He died aged 78.
Heather would like to get in touch with any family members of George Whitfield.
