WE’RE starting a series of Looking Back articles featuring some old postcards found by Barry Barnes of Chickerell.

They come from Dorcas Annie Haskell’s collection (Barry’s mother) and feature some scenes from Weymouth and various groups of people.

Barry is asking Looking Back readers to help him identify the year of the photos and the people in them.

One of the first photos features Holy Trinity School in Weymouth.

Barry said: “I used to go to Holy Trinity when I was in the YMCA. I was 14 and I think this photo was taken in 1956 or 1957.”

Does anyone know any of the people in the photo or confirm when it was taken?

We’ve also got a photo of a charabanc which was used for pleasure outings from Weymouth.

One of the photos looks as though it was taken outside Weymouth Baptist Church on the Esplanade. The people inside the charabanc are very well dressed for a breezy ride.

Charabancs were seen as a traditional part of a seaside trip and replaced horsedrawn carriages. The other postcard shows one of the charabancs is advertising a trip to Lyme Regis. On the car we can see ‘Victory Motors Weymouth’.

The charabanc is also parked outside a tobacconists and confectionary shop. Does anyone know what the shop is?

Also can anyone name the years in which these photos were taken? We’ll be looking at some more of Barry’s postcard collection next week.
