A TALK is being held today in Weymouth on the history of Bristol Docks.
Bristol - Seaport City is at the St Aldhelm's Centre in Spa Road at 2.30pm.
The talk, held by the National Trust South Dorset Association, will describe the history of the development of the Bristol Docks from its foundation as tidal quays.
Only the strongest ships could rest on the mud so they had to be 'shipshape and Bristol fashion.'
Subsequently, locks were built to facilitate the rapidly expanding trade in tobacco, wines, spirits and also the slave trade.
The talk, which will be given by a maritime historian, will then look at how the docks have been adapted for current-day activities.
Admission is £4 including refreshments. For more information contact Geoffrey and Elizabeth Wrench on 01300 321601.
