MANY thanks to David Lasseter of Frimley, Surrey, who wants some help in solving a mystery related to the bombing on HMS Foylebank in Portland Harbour.

David's father Ernest Lasseter was on board the vessel in Portland Harbour when it was attacked on July 4 1940.

We have featured people's recollections of the horrific attack in these very pages over the past few weeks.

David is hoping to track down a painting depicting the disaster which used to hang in the cafe of Portland Castle.

He wrote: "My father Ernest survived the attack and went on to serve aboard other ships until the end of the Second World War. He was also involved in the naval bombardment on D Day.

"Like most men who faced the horrors of war he never talked of his experiences.

"A picture of the bombing of Foylebank showing the horror which must have existed on board used to hang in Portland Castle cafe but was loaned to the officers' mess of HMS Osprey but I am unaware of its present whereabouts.

"It's been my hope for many years to obtain a copy of the painting so if any of your readers can help it would be greatly appreciated.

"Such a tragic incident, having been captured in paint, should, because of its local significance be hanging in a place which is accessible to the people of Weymouth and Portland."

*Do you know what has happened to the painting? If so please get in touch with Looking Back on 01305 830973. We would love to help Davis track it down.
