LAST week some of the excitement of the solar eclipse in America swept across the Atlantic.

And the excitement came right here to Weymouth in particular.

The movement of the moon between the Earth and sun produced a dramatic event in the US but the only place that ended up seeing the partial eclipse was off the coast of Weymouth.

Over here, about five per cent of the sun was covered, according to Met Office forecaster Luke Miall.

He said: "The only place that had seen the partial eclipse was on the south coast of Weymouth which had a good show, but for the the majority of the country it was too cloudy."

In celebration of Weymouth being the best place in the country to see the US eclipse, we cast our minds back to August 11, 1999 when Weymouth last went eclipse crazy.

People lined up on the Esplanade and donned special viewing glasses for the big moment.
