County is most eco-aware

PEOPLE in Dorset are more eco-aware than other people in the country, according to a new survey.

Textile experts Shirley Technologies Limited (STL) say that while there is now growing awareness of the impact of plastic carrier bags, not many people know about a worldwide ecological standard relating to clothing.

Oeko-Tex is the safety standard used by many textile manufacturers abroad which screens for harmful substances, but many people in this country have never heard of it. A study by STL reveals the people most likely to recognise it are shoppers in Dorset.

Retailers and manufacturers are not obliged to display the labelling, but STL says this is surprising when so many are using green and ecological claims to sell their goods.

Its survey suggests many consumers would be willing to pay more for clothing if there was evidence they were free from harmful chemicals.
