Bag idea is looking good on paper
BRAND NEW BAG: Sarah Whiteside and her eco-friendly paper bags
BRAND NEW BAG: Sarah Whiteside and her eco-friendly paper bags

PORTLAND designer Sarah Whiteside has got a handle on making the island a plastic bag-free zone.

The bespoke dress and jewellery creator, who operates out of Fortuneswell, has stopped using carrier bags and has turned instead to pretty purple - yet sturdy - reusable paper bags.

She explained: "I hate plastic bags. They blow about all over the place and you even find them on the beach.

"I thought it was time I did my bit. More and more people are buying into the idea of using fabric bags or paper bags and I thought that if I did, it would be one more company on the island doing their bit for the environment."

Sarah set up her business, Frank Designs, a year ago.

The move to reusable paper bags came thanks to a website she stumbled upon.

"I bought them online from a site I came across. They are just £70 for 400 so it is worth it - and they look so lovely. Hopefully people will reuse them."

Sarah added: "The whole plastic bag issue seems to be really taking off. I have three children so when I shop, I buy bags of stuff but I use cotton ones or bags for life.

"I think it is great that the big supermarkets are buying into it now. Asda doesn't give plastic bags away and Tesco gives points when you reuse bags. People are working to make Portland a bag-free zone. We are getting there and hopefully will be there by the time of the Olympics in 2012."
