Parking charges are driving people away

My family and I decided to take a trip to Normandy for a long weekend.

We had a great time wandering around the D-Day landing sites around Normandy.

It struck me very quickly that not once did I have to pay for parking.

This included some sites of historic interest and even small towns like St Mere Eglise and the beaches used on June 6.

So why is it that Weymouth Council has to charge so much for people to visit the town and close areas?

This is surely is preventing people from visiting the town!

Take for instance the German film company recently in Weymouth filming a documentary about the south Dorset areas including Weymouth.

The producer had been here a week and had two parking tickets one of which was for being over-parked for a few minutes (I was there).

He will put in his documentary that while Weymouth is a beautiful place to visit he is also telling potential visitors not to come because of the daft charges and the overzealous parking attendants.

Would you be happier if all parking in Weymouth and Portland was free? Try finding somewhere to park to do your shopping when all the parking spaces are taken up by people spending the day at the seaside or others parking their cars while they go to work. Bet there would be a load of complaints about the lack of parking then and shouldn't something be done about limiting the amount of time a car could park. A parking charge perhaps or maybe people could park in Normandy and pop back to Weymouth?

A few days ago my wife & I went to Salisbury on entering the town we saw a sign for park & ride so we thought we would give it a try, on arriving at a very nice purpose built car park we parked & walked to the bus station building. My wife asked a very nice man about the cost & she in turn was asked if she had a bus pass, yes she replied & was told in that case it was free when do i pay for parking the car she said, the man said that is also free. So we will certainly go again. It would be very nice if Weymouth’s park & ride was attended by such nice staff & it was free to bus pass holders, but knowing our council i doubt very much if it will be free or attended by such nice staff.
