Why not divert traffic during water works?

I would like to endorse all points raised by Paul Pearson in his letter ‘Water work goes against the flow’ (Your Say, January 14).

However, I would like to add that some of the time spent undertaking the mains water replacement - that we have all suffered over many months along the Littlemoor Road stretch - was due to digging up parts of the road again.

This was to rectify the work that was done within this period and in part by the few workmen involved.

Are we going to see the work currently being done to exceed the stated four weeks?

I am not a betting man, but I am tempted to put money on the job taking more than four weeks to complete because, in part, they might need to re-do some of it!

I dare not mention my thoughts on working at night or from both ends at once or working between rush hour times, or for more parents to walk children to the nearby schools!

When serious accidents occur on the Preston Road, the police often divert traffic.

At least in part, can some traffic be diverted? For instance, traffic from the Osmington end which is going to Littlemoor or the Dorchester Road can be diverted along Seven Acres Road through to Coombe Valley Road and Littlemoor Road, so reducing the backlog of traffic.

Perhaps the positioning of suitable signs might allow drivers to avoid Preston Road altogether.

Alas, I cannot see how drivers along the Preston Beach Road can avoid the long crawl.

Let us have less common sense, think of all the profits petrol stations might lose, the consequences of doctors appointments not having to be changed through missed appointments, police being able to get to incidents on time, ambulances being able to get their patients to hospital, jobsworths having nothing to do when planning these roadworks for maximum disruption possibly never having visited to proposed site beforehand.

So it's the jobsworths deliberately planning unnecessary works just to annoy and delay the 585s of the world? Not the essential replacement of a water main then?
When do you propose they do the work? As we all know evening or late night working is out. The 585s of the world would start up a constant whining about the jobsworths deliberately planning this work to disturb their sleep and spoil their evenings with the noise and mess from the roadworks. Weekend working is out for the same reasons.
Perhaps what is really needed is for the experts at everything to show them how it should be done. Perhaps the 585s of the world should go along and dig a hole, chuck in some cement, ten minutes at most, job done.
Common sense? How about planning your own journeys to take the roadworks into account. Leave a bit earlier, plan your own route, as being local I assume you do have local knowledge of the alternatives. It's not as if these roadworks weren't advertised in advance is it?
Patience, apparently, is a virtue. Not around here it ain't. It's non-existent.

Genghis I think you are asking a bit much, perhaps if all the moaners were invited to join the team doing the water main just for a day they might have a better understanding of what is involved in making sure that when we turn our tap on water comes out, the problem is as you say journeys timed down to the last minute and the idea that you should take account of the roadwork’s and leave a bit earlier is preposterous.

Actually, the roadworks didn't bother me although I use the affected roads.
I did a good job winding up Genghis, Portland and popup, portland.
They rose to the bait and took it hook, line and sinker.
