Chapelhay view rather blinkered

10:00am Monday 8th March 2010

AS A resident of the Chapel-hay area I have to say Mark Ford is only seeing what he wants to see ‘Chapelhay spirit’, (Your Say, March 3).

When I walk through the area I see graffiti tags on many walls, very young children running around unattended and drivers of all ages speeding along Franchise Street and St Leonards Road.

Then there is loud obnoxious dance music and the stench of skunk marijuana emanating from many of the flats, and the recently opened Dugdales store has a smashed window and door.

After dark, groups of teens are intimidating just by their presence and can often be heard shouting abuse and having sex in the tunnels through to Rodwell Avenue.

Yes, the area looks better for the flats being painted, but this is merely cosmetic. The only thing that has slightly improved the area is the closure of the yob magnet which is the Chapelhay ‘community’ gardens.

Regardless of what the community group says, the gardens, if reopened, will once again draw in drunken teens and heroin addicts from all over town and should remain closed and once more be built upon.

Having said all this, Chapelhay is far from the worst area of Weymouth to live in and we can at least be thankful for that.
