YOUR report in the Echo (March 2) states that residents in Weymouth and Portland have to pay twice as much to their district council as West Dorset residents. It then adds that the local council precept needs to be added to WDDC bill.
In the table printed it shows quite clearly that those councils which provide comprehensive services; Weymouth and Dorchester charge more, Dorchester higher than Weymouth.
These towns provide parks, playing fields (Chickerell FC first team play in Weymouth), swimming pools, tennis courts, bowling greens, and in Weymouth daily cleaned beaches, theatre, harbour, beach chalets and a crematorium.
Chickerell, meanwhile, uses the Weymouth and Portland facilities but does not pay for them. Perhaps discounted charges should be levied for these services to Weymouth and Portland residents to compensate for the higher council tax. The alternative would be to give Weymouth a sensible boundary.
