Rotary's thanks for Haiti support

ON behalf of all the members of the three Rotary Clubs in Weymouth may we please give a big thank you to all those people in South Dorset who generously gave to our appeal for assistance to Haiti.

The three Weymouth Rotary Clubs between them have raised more than £20,000 since the earthquake in January and the majority of this money was given in our street and shop collections and in the Dorset Echo Appeal.

We can assure you that most of the money raised is already assisting those most in need by supplying them with shelter, clean water and other basic necessities using the Rotary ShelterBox and Water Survival Box Charities.

From the start of the appeal in January we have been overwhelmed by the generosity of local people, who have been prepared to help those in great need in a largely unknown part of the world. We must also thank the editor and the staff of the Dorset Echo who have got behind the Haiti Appeal and given it their full support.

To date the money received directly by the Echo has totalled £5,500 and we are very pleased with the continued publicity that the paper has provided.

This has been a very important source to maintain the public’s voluntary giving.

To date Shelterbox have distributed more than 10,000 tents and life-saving supplies to those most in need.

It is estimated that one million Haitians are currently living without adequate shelter so the need still remains.

Disaster Relief is just one way in which Rotary can help. Please keep reading the Echo for details of our other activities including the organisation of Weymouth Carnival throughout 2010.
