Why we are best kept in the dark

The new mushroom statues, costing £335,000, is money well spent as representing how the local and national government view us.

We, like mushrooms, are best kept in the dark etc.

Think Rod is saying that the government and local councils hold Weymouth and Portland in such low esteem that they would sooner throw hundreds of thousands of pounds in to a muddy pond than on an amenity like a decent width esplanade all around the bay.
Perhaps he is right though I have seen some refurbished old lights appear on a stretch of the Esplanade so we will have an olympic legacy after all.

They are not mushrooms.

They are toadstools.
