Using weedkiller in public is lethal

I am concerned that a member of the public is spraying weedkiller on to the grass verges alongside Glennie Way, Chickerell.

My dog regularly eats grass while out on walks and so when I noticed the ugly wide strip of dead grass I phoned Dorset County Council to complain.

Their representative has contacted me to assure me that none of the local authorities have carried out any spraying.

Therefore I have to conclude that a very misguided and thoughtless member of our community is spraying potentially lethal chemicals in a public place.

There are very tight regulations on the use of herbicide and pesticides.

The regulations are there for a reason, namely that the the chemicals are poison!

I hope the authorities make every effort to track down and bring action against the culprit soon.

Let us hope that this individual hasn’t sprayed poison onto the children’s play areas of our community!

Robin Maslin, Chickerell

As the dog is kept on a lead in a public place, it ought not to be very difficult to prevent it straying onto this particular grassy area.

If only dog owners would clean up after their dogs I would have a bit of sympathy.

If you don't want your dog to eat the grass, don't let it go on the grass.

Or is it that it's the best place for fido to leave it, where you don't have to pick it up?

Just for once

I agree with IDONTKNOWIFITSTRUE :-)

I think perhaps the 3 dog haters on here have missed the point of this letter?

The point appears to be that a member of the public has sprayed the verges with an uknown chemical which could be harmful to pets, wildlife and the general public.

So whether you are a dog owner or not it would seem to be very worrying?

Perhaps comments should be actually about the subject of the letter and not just used to bash the minority of dog owners who are irresponsible and don't pick up after their dogs?

Why do you make the assumption that I and other contributors are 'dog haters'?
Having owned a dog for many years in the past, I consider that it is the duty of a dog owner to make sure that the dog does not come to harm. This is best achieved by keeping control of the dog and in a public place, control is best done by keeping the dog on a lead.
I also think that very young children should wear reins! It only takes a moments inattention by their parent or responsible adult for them to get into harm's way.

I agree dogs should be on leads in public but I still feel that it is very worrying that a member of the public is presumably wandering around spraying goodness knows what. Do the authorities know what it is or what strength it is?

Weedkilling should be left to the professionals and the authorities. You can't keep wildlife on leads or in reins can you?

How do you suggest that I keep wild life out of my garden - foxes wander about in there, I know because they trigger my outside lights and I have seen them. I use weed killers, should I stop?
Weeds grow on the footpath outside my house - how tall should I let them grow? The council don't let the weeds bother them any more in the same way that it must have been years since the path and gutters were swept.

I think the point is that this was a public space not someones garden. I'm sure that you use weedkiller bought from a general store which would be unharmful to animals. How can anyone be sure that that was what was used in the incident talked about in the letter?

I have had weeds on the pathway outside my house too, I pull them out - simple and safe ;-)

I am glad for you that you are still fit enough to pull weeds, alas for me, 'il tempo è fuggito'.
