Choosing lasers is poor judgement

Never have I felt so let down and embarrassed by a group of local representatives. I am referring to the laser lights.

Did anyone see this particular display anywhere else before purchasing it?

Had no-one any idea how limited the impact would be?

Had no-one worked out that the nature of the surrounding lighting would detract from any display?

It was stated that we were the first seaside resort with this ‘art installation’ and now I can see why!

That so much money could be spent with what I can only assume was with no sense of the final outcome is poor judgement at best.

To have then made this poor judgement at the cost of one of the key features of Weymouth Bay, its fairy lights, is unforgivable. Where did this sense of context go? Where were the planning department when we needed them?

This much-loved feature of the bay could have been easily, and in comparison very cheaply, upgraded with a set of LED lights to great effect.

Not only would we have had long lasting, cheap to run and hard to break beautiful sources of multi-coloured lights but we would have had a light display in keeping with the nature and character of Weymouth Bay, which would have been a greater attraction and not a hazard to local shipping.

That's your opinion of course. What about those that don't made the change, don't their opinions count?

As to the hazard to local shipping, yeah, right.

Sorry "made" should read as "mind" shouldn't change thoughts mid-flow.

If you don't like the lasers then I don't like the TV mast at Wyke Regis.

Spoils the views, I say bring it down. So what if you lose your TV signal!

I love the new Lasers - far better than those 1950's fairly lights. I mean, for goodness sake - Fairy lights ???? Reminds me of Billy Butlins, Hi-De-Hi, Cheap and tacky. Whereas the new Lasers are fabulous. I love them.

Joan Edgington & I Millin - valid comments but apparently as soon as someone posts a letter in this vein the woodwork gives and the letters come up contradicting,
Is this not a free forum, do not people have the right to a say?
As for the comments about the 1950s, coupled with the words "cheap and tacky" thats got to be a joke, theres nowt so "cheap and tacky" as parts of so-called modern Britain, why do we have to be led by the modernists and designers? Why do comments on this forum draw the replies they get? It seems to this outsider that anything but the prescribed comment forces a "feeding frenzy" including sadly, bullying and ridicule + of course the cheap jibes and parochial remarks, why? in this age of "free speech" one should be able to post an opinion! good on the two aforesaid posters - now stand by for all the abuse this gets - no gratuitous "caps", no rant, the sad buggers'll find something- watch this space!!!

It could be that many actually like whats happening to Weymouth and are sick and tired of those who dont want change. People move to weymouth to die and dont want change, they want to recapture their memories of the "good ol times" to the detrimental affect of those who have always lived here and would like to see progression.

Fabulous ? Oh come on, please. Different certainly, interesting, for a short while possibly, but fabulous ? Hardly. And if you pick the wrong 6 minutes to walk along the seafront you don't see them at all.
Still each to their own, whatever rocks your boat.

Oldbrock – at the risk of being called a ‘sad bugger’, may I remind you of some remarks you have made recently - Lincoln is a County of incest, David Cameron is a school boy bully, idiots removed the pineapples, a local councillor is ‘well dyed in wool’, Lord Coe is a crawling, snivelling, lying, little creep, a Weymouth hotel has cheap muck, and people travelling to Portland for the Olympics are sailboat heads, a letter writer (who has a right to an opinion too) has been paid to spout – need I go on? Regardless of your views, the above reads as name calling, insults, cheap jibes as well as parochial remarks. Perhaps you should ask yourself why?

Yes freedom of speech, it works both ways. It seems you and the letter writer think that only opinions similar to your own are allowed and the rest of us should sit idly by basking in the brilliance of what you say. Well I've had enough of people constantly running my home town down and I'll speak up for it. That is my freedom of speech.

Change is ok if it's good.
However not all the changes have been good, and those that don't like them are just as entitled to voice their opinions of them as you are. It's called free speech, something many countries don't have.

Opinions, opinions, opinions! what about some facts. The fact is that Weymouth's tourism business has been declining for years for all sorts of reasons. Perhaps one of the reasons is that the town and particularly the seafront / esplanade was looking shabby and dated. Look at it now! A vast improvement on even 2 years ago!

We have ben advised by the council, people you voted for, that the costs to mainatin the old fairy lights was prohibitive. The very fact that they have taken a bold decision to try something new speaks volumes for me.
Why not give it a chance before running it, the town and the council down. Agreed not all things modern are necessarily progress, but equally not all things 'historic' are nostalgic and worth retaining.

Wow, cannot believe that some people think the lasers to be any good. Personally I think they are naff, as dull as dish water and not worth tuppence. They are hardly the kind of state of the art lighting that has been the feature of a Jean Michel Jarre concert or such. Some people have really low expectations.

Dorsettraveller says...

sorry maximan, there are people out there who have a diferent opinion to you. I havent met one person yet who dislikes the laser lights and the columns.
My expectations of this council are to consider options, give new ideas a try and not to pander to the vociferous few who constantly seem to complain and moan. By my reckoning the petition of almost 1700 names is only just over 3% of Weymouth's population. Is this enough to justify taking up more council time to debate this subject all over again?

You may have heard more negative comments, but I have heard none - fact - having spoken to many of people. Also why dont you give the lasers a chance, applaud councillors who are prepared to take bold decisions and try to move this town forward.
