Inconsiderate parkers will cause public order problems

I am writing to draw attention to the traffic situation in East Street, Weymouth, opposite the Governor's Lane Car Park.

For many years, drivers have paused in the entrance of this car park, so that they might get out and look around for empty spaces.

If they do not do so, they may drive round the car park without finding one.

Then there is no going round again, because the one-way system obliges them to drive away.

The system I have described has worked for many years without a problem. Other drivers, wanting to get into the car park, simply form a queue behind the first one.

But I have noticed more than once in the last few weeks, that drivers were not able to wait to get into the car park, because there were cars were parked on the other side of the road on double yellow lines.

This causes an obstruction. The road is narrow and there simply is not room to allow those drivers, simply wanting to drive along the street, to get past.

I have recently witnessed a number of arguments caused by this situation.

I believe that, if this growing habit of illegally parking on double yellow lines in East Street is not firmly resisted, we are likely to have public order problems there.

Dr. Alan Chedzoy, Spa Road, Weymouth.

Were the cars examined to see whether they were legally parked there? Did Dr. Chedzoy consider informing the police at the time that he saw these arguments? Perhaps he can tell us why he chose not to do so.
