We must fight to retain this excellent facility
Some years ago, there was a brewery that sold a popular bitter on which the profit was probably low.
The brewery reduced the quantity it brewed and in time, their pubs stopped receiving barrels of that particular beer. Patrons were told "there is no demand for it now".
The beer disappeared- and so has the brewery!
The Labour government has in effect done the same thing with post offices. They forced people to deal with their benefits etc by other means and the post offices lost the custom - but by no means all custom.
We hear that Fordington Post Office is now doomed to close. The result will be greater queues at the Main Post Office - with nowhere to park (as on Fordington Green).
Customers who come from not only Fordington but also outlying villages will have to find other less convenient post offices to transact their business. First Dorset Credit Union will need another place to deposit members' cash and
cheques.
Fordington Post Office is profitable. We should be told how much it costs the Post Office to support it - and how much cash Fordington generates for the Post Office.
No doubt the Labour government will go the way of the brewery cited in the first paragraph.
We must fight to retain this excellent facility not only for its post office business but also for the compassionate treatment of the many elderly people who need guidance in transacting their business.
Will they get this at the impersonal main post office? Readers know the answer.
Brian Parkhurst,
Fordington.
I was disgusted to read that the Post Office on Buxton Road, Weymouth, is up for closure.
Has this service no consideration for the elderly and people with disability problems.
The Post Office closed the other office in Wyke Square, causing problems for the elderly having to hire a taxi to collect their pension.
As a service the Post Office is finished and would be far better handing the service over to a more responsible body who might care more.
Jean Munro,
Address supplied.
I find it ironic that Jim Knight voted for the complete closure of 2,500 Post Offices in Parliament and yet you put him on your front page saying that he will support a Weymouth couple who are about to lose their livelihood as the result of his action.
Your excellent editorial puts his shameful act in perspective.
J Figg, Weymouth.
So, Jim Knight is campaigning to keep local Post Offices open. Then, why did he vote in favour of the continued closure of Post Offices when the matter came before the House of Commons a few months ago?
Peter Watson.
