GARDENS at Chapelhay in Weymouth have been saved from ruin by staff and customers from a local pub who have transformed the space into a bright park.

The small gardens, close to Weymouth Harbour, have been reclaimed for the community to enjoy thanks to a donation from the Old Rooms Inn, Cove Road, Weymouth, and a team of 12 volunteers.

Katherine Sparks, from the Old Rooms Inn, said: "The idea was to transform the space and make a difference to an area that has been neglected and left in a state of disrepair. It's good for the community to take back this area and be able to enjoy the beautiful views it offers."

The £1,000 donation from the pub paid for a woodland walk complete with a 38ft mural designed by artist Steve Jurado, new park benches, flower tubs and cleaning of the area.

General manager of the Old Rooms Matthew Betts said: "The Chapelhay project is right on our doorstep so it seemed ideal that we should help out.

"We have all been looking forward to bringing some life and colour to this treasured local space in time for summer."
