£4,000 lottery grant for singing group

A WEYMOUTH-based women's singing group has been awarded nearly £4,000 by the National Lottery for a new music project.

Wacapella has received an Awards for All grant of £3,910 to help them run a host of workshops and devise new music.

The group is now keen to recruit new members, particularly those with sight impairment, and will be forming a rubbish band' inspired by the Warehouse Theatre where it meets.

Musical director Juliet Harwood will be leading the singing workshops as part of the Site and Sound project.

She said: "The music we sing is carefully chosen so that it can be learned by rote. You do not have to be able to read music or the words to join in."

Local percussionist Mike Keane will also be running a series of workshops for the group.

The first workshop takes place on May 21 and the music sessions will culminate in a concert in Hope Church, Weymouth, on July 12 with the town's Quangle Wangle choir.

For more information on how to get involved in the sessions, contact Jacqui Trent on 01305 785825.
