A VILLAGE stepped back in time and was transformed into a 1940s Second World War scene complete with tanks, air raid sirens and a battle re-enactment.

Maiden Newton came alive to the sound of an air raid siren and re-enactment soldiers walked around the village in full uniform along with military vehicles on display.

The streets were lined with bunting and flags and the shops sold war memorabilia and wartime goods.

Live music and war tunes could be heard amongst all the action and carried on all weekend.

Children, families, pensioners, ex-soldiers and visitors all came together for an event that has been planned by villagers for two years - Maiden Newton At War.

Shopkeeper Sandra Burrows said: "It's been like stepping back in time with all the re-enactment soldiers and the village in decoration. The idea was to bring the village together and get everyone involved and it is really something to see it all."

Organiser Ian Hambridge said that the event all came together well after so much planning.

He said: "Everyone has got into the 1940s spirit. We even have vicars on bikes, soldiers and themed dress of all kinds."

The weekend event kicked off with a wartime song and dance at the village hall on the Friday night.

Battle re-enactments over the weekend saw soldiers fight with pyrotechnics in a mocked-up war field.

The Saturday night culminated in a big open-air band swing concert with AJ's Swing Band and support from a Frank Sinatra tribute and The Stage Door Johnnies.

Villagers took part in the jiving after completing months of lessons in preparation for the event.

A large display of memories and photographs from local people who lived through the Second World War was also on display at Greenford School.
