DORSET is shown off in a new film written by Weymouth-based historian and author Maureen Attwooll.

The Discovering Dorset DVD is a ‘spectacular portrayal of one of the most enchanting areas in Britain,’ according to producers.

The county’s history, literary heritage, legends, personalities and unrivalled scenery are all reflected in the film, a clip of which can be viewed on the Dorset Echo website. It was made by Bristol production company 1st Take which specialises in local history films.

Discovering Dorset takes the form of a journey from Lyme Regis to Swanage, following the world-famous Jurassic Coast but also exploring some lesser-known places along the way.

Stories are told about old industries and towns which reinvented themselves as seaside resorts in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Mrs Attwooll and the production team filmed scenes while touring the coast in a classic car earlier in the autumn.

Producer Dave Rogers said: “This is the first volume of a series of films covering Dorset’s history, which we hope will be interesting and enjoyable to local people and tourists alike.

“Our location filming, which was blessed by excellent weather, reveals the true beauty of the county’s coastal area and we also uncover places that may often be missed by the casual visitor.”

Discovering Dorset Volume One: A Coastal Tour from Lyme Regis to Swanage is available for £14.95 from many outlets including WH Smith, Weymouth and Dorchester and Ship to Shore at Brewers Quay, Weymouth. Alternatively order direct by visiting: www.1st-take.com
