MORE than £1million is believed to have changed hands as punters pulled off a major coup betting on the outcome of Weymouth’s game against Rushden and Diamonds.

A leading bookmaker said the incident had ‘rocked the industry’ and was unprecedented for a non-league game.

Punters began placing large bets on a Rushden win as news spread that the Terras would be fielding a youth team after senior players refused to play amid concerns over insurance cover.

Some bookies, including Steve Blanks of Abbotsbury Road in Weymouth, suspended betting as online exchanges and high-street betting shops were inundated with people trying to place bets.

More than £680,000 was traded on one online exchange and bookies are believed to have paid out at least a further £500,000.

Meanwhile, fans are demanding answers on the future of the club after the young Terras side were beaten 9-0.

Manager Alan Lewer said that a decision had to be reached by midnight tonight if the club were to survive in the league.

I wonder if stories will start emerging over the coming days of people placing bets who shouldn't have been...

THE Mayor and Mayoress of Weymouth and Portland have won a bid to run an ice cream business a month after it was rejected.

Not one but two (strange?)stories in the Echo today, or is it so strange.

Anybody called Curtis or Calder seen in a betting shop on Saturday? Seriously though, this is another example of people profiting from the Terras rather than putting something into it.

Dorsetdumpling, I am getting a slightly different 'vision'...

"Weymouth FC go out of business... Fans who recently paid 50p/share in the hope of resurrecting the failed club as a going concern are now demanding the Government give them their money back"

What makes me laugh is that people payed £100 to see the game :P

Have the 50p's been banked in Iceland?

The bookies are the only ones to blame here. It was common knowledge well before the match, that the youth team were playing.

I don't follow football, or the Terras, and I had heard about it.

The bookies lost out, because they were slack..
