PUPILS from Weymouth made history by leaving mementoes for future generations in a time capsule.
The St John Primary School youngsters wrote pieces about themselves and their lives to be buried with the container on a building site.
Some 27 children, aged eight and nine, also handed in items they thought represented 2009, such as coins, toys and memorabilia.
Then, the pupils watched the container sealed and buried on the Hutton Apartments development on the seafront at Greenhill.
Site manager Peter O’Connor said: “The children were absolutely amazing and their efforts far exceeded our expectations.
“We were delighted and very impressed.
“They entered into the spirit of ‘saving the present for future generations’ with great enthusiasm and put a lot of hard work into both their writing and gathering some artefacts and personal contributions that they felt might be of interest to the people who would unearth the capsule in the future.”
Laishley Developments is building the apartments on the site of a block of flats on Greenhill, near the Sea Life Park.
The company invited the school, in nearby Coombe Avenue, to take part in the time capsule project.
Head of year Tim Stevens helped the pupils. Each youngster had an individual, personalised tube and dropped it into the capsule.
The contributions were buried with a history of their school, some items of school uniform, a copy of the Times, a price list for everyday consumer items and a description of the new Hutton Apartments development.
