Speed limit plans welcomed for danger road

NEW speed restrictions are being introduced on a dangerous stretch of the A35 where several people have been killed.

Highways chiefs plan to reduce the limits on two sections of the trunk route between Chideock and the Crown Roundabout at Bridport.

Members of the town council’s highways and transportation sub committee were told that the proposal is to extend the exiting 40mph limit east of Chideock all the way to the 50 mph limit at Miles Cross – a notorious accident blackspot where there have been several deaths.

The 50mph limit would be extended from there to cover the whole of Bridport bypass up to the Crown Roundabout.

The highways Agency says it hopes to have the new speed limits in place within the next six months.

Town Surveyor Daryl Chambers said the reductions were something the authority had been lobbying for.

“It’s got to be good – let’s hope it reduces the accidents,” he said.

West Dorset MP Oliver Letwin, who has been calling for safety improvement along that stretch of road for several years also welcomed the plans.

He said: “It is very good news that, after a long campaign to get safer speed limits on this dangerous stretch of road, the Highways Agency is taking steps in the right direction. They have listened to what we have been saying – and I strongly welcome this.”

Over the years the road between Chideock and Bridport has claimed many lives – including two double death crashes.

In 2005 two pensioners from Lyme Regis Rhys Lloyd, 89 and Popsy Hopkins, 87 died when their car was involved in a three vehicle crash at the Miles Cross junction.

The junction at the turning to Eype claimed the lives of two young doctors shortly after the bypass was opened.

Road safety campaigners have called for a roundabout at Miles Cross.

Looking at the picture, where the road is 4 lanes wide, I don't know but it seems to me that the accident was more likely to have been driver/rider error or problems with the serviceability of the vehicle than an 'unsafe' road, but the panacea seems to be to reduce speed limits. How long before we get back to men with red flags, introduce road humps or revenue cameras instead of improvements to driver/rider capabilities and an increase in traffic police?

This is typical of the Echo re-enforcing the twaddling liberals rhetoric about speed.

You can make this any speed, it is not the speed that is the main cause of the problem here!

The problem was caused by the stupid design that made lanes converge on a blind summit and bend!

Not only that the turn off/on from Eype should have always been a proper slip lane, instead of that people come over the blind summit from the Easterly direction and find cars in front anchoring thier brakes in the very short run up for the turn off for Eype!

I have driven that road for years both slow and at high speed and never had an accident because I am aware of this.

Slowing the speed will make a difference but ONLY as a means to cover up the fact that it is the design that is wrong and the Council would rather pay the cheaper price of a road sign for speed than do the damm job right! However of course slower speeds like that tend to equal more pollution and traffic so take your pick?

It is similar to Askerswell by the old resturaunt that burned down, what insane idiot thought of converging those lanes on the top of that blind summit, it is always an accident waiting to happen and it has done many times because of it's stupid design!

If you want to stop accidents Don't talk to liberlaists and the green loonies to design a road, talk to a professional driver, talk to a Police pursuit driver, an HGV driver a motorcyclist!

What Sinkingship said is very true, I am a proff. Road Safety Engineer and have worked on this road many times. it is not a speed relaited problem that is the causation of these traffic collisions, its the drivers who are frust into a right turn lane that should never have been designer in that location. It copmes from a time when the road which was designed by a well respected company just got it wronge. There was no road safety audit as such carried out at the time. If there had been it would have highlighted the lack of forward sight stopping distance for westbound vehicles, who are in an overtake system. As far as the exstension of the westbound 40mphspeed limit out of CHidiock you are having a joke. 95% of all vehicles exiting up that hill are travelling at 45-50mph. That is standard for Police, HGV traffic and the vast majority of normal drivers. It is a two lane road with a full forward sight distance and if needed a stopping lane for eastbound traffic.
The Highways Agency when they advertise this Order will have a real fight to introduce it as there will be an army of petitioners who will formally object to the introduction.

It’s no good talking to a motorcyclist they can’t read speed limits and think that white lines etc in the road are just to make it look pretty.

A motorcyclists reactions is likely to be far quicker than a car driver as are his observation skills. Sadly you also get dickheads on bikes too!

You notice things on a bike different ot that of a car.

From memory the accident in the picture was caused by a motorcycle just released from an earlier accident further towards the Crown roundabout crashing into a vehicle going in the opposite direction held up by the same accident trying to do a U turn ( the motor cyclist was fined for speeding)so again was driver error

As I said dickheads can ride motorbikes too, sadly!

However there is no denying that the design of this road is the main fault to blame and the do-gooder agenda is bleeding it for all it is worth blaming speed alone.

No doubt once the new speed restrictions have been introduced, there will be some idiots who end up trying to get let off on some technicality or other.

Authority's reaction is always to impose more speed limits- which from my own observation, most drivers do not observe. The Police rarely take any action other than with their fixed cameras so its all a pretty useless exercise in my humble opinion. Inappropriate speed is the danger- most accidents are caused by driver error and unawareness of what around them. More speed limits will not help.
