Biker died in my arms, says Weymouth mum

A DISTRAUGHT mum has told how she cradled a biker in her arms as he lay dying on the road.

Aaron Spring, 26, of Weymouth, died when he crashed his Honda motorcycle into a wall in Chickerell Road close to the Admiral Hardy pub.

An off-duty fireman found him outside his house and was helped by Miss Crowley, who lived across the road as he gave first aid But Mr Spring was confirmed dead at the scene by ambulance men.

Miss Crowley was at home making her Sunday lunch with her daughter and her friends when she heard a bang outside her home in Chickerell Road.

She joined the off duty fireman as he tried to save Mr Spring’s life.

Miss Crowley said the fireman could not find a pulse and they felt no heartbeat but she found a faint pulse and spoke to Mr Spring as she lay next to him.

She said: “I was making the Sunday lunch when I heard the bang. I looked out of the window and dropped what was in my hands and screamed at the kids to call an ambulance.

“I didn’t look twice I just ran across the road with no shoes on.

“I ran over and laid down beside him.”

Miss Crowley said Mr Spring’s helmet came off during the crash and the piece of wall that he hit was knocked across the pavement and in front of the next house.

She said: “I kept talking to him but he wasn’t conscious.

“The off-duty fireman could not find a pulse but I found a slight pulse in his arm.

“He was getting cold so I was screaming ‘get an ambulance.’ “And I was holding his hand and cuddling him with blankets around him.

“He had probably already died but that faint pulse must have been the last running around his body.

“We checked for a heartbeat but could not find one at all.”

“I’ll never forget his eyes."

Miss Crowley – whose son Thomas, 11, is still recovering the use of his legs after coming off his bicycle – said she has agonised for the family since the man’s death.

She said: “My heart has actually broken for that poor kid’s mum.

“To think of anybody getting that knock is the most horrible thing and he is only a kid.

“He really is only a kid.”

Miss Crolley’s daughter Mary Ann Crowley, 13, was at home with her mum and friends Amy Biddle, 13 and Chantelle Jackson, 14.

Mary Ann said: “We went outside and he was just lying there.

“It was horrible.”

All credit to those who tried to help this young man. My heart really does go out to the family as a mother who too lost her son in a tragic accident recently while on his motorbike. Love to you all at this sad time. xxxxx

it is very sad, and my thoughts go to this poor young mans family and friends.
However, l'm afraid i agree with the comment that was on here earlier, now removed by the echo i see! i think its a bit sad and unnecessary to print and describe this poor lads last moments??? do you not think his family are going through enough? Shame on you Echo and disappointing you couldnt take the criticism.

I am sorry tyson321 but i have to take issue with you it’s not the roads in Dorset that are at fault it is the people that use them, even if all our roads were cart tracks it’s down to the driver/rider to use them in an appropriate manner with regard to the condition of the road the weather conditions the vehicle they are driving/riding and last but not least their own ability. It’s all too easy to go looking for somebody else to blame for our own inadequacies but that seems to be the way of the world nowadays and until we face up to the fact that it is us the drivers and riders who are to blame we will keep losing lives for no good reason. I would like to offer my condolences to the Spring family on your sad loss.

fair point,i drive the roads every day and sometimes i can't believe what i'm seeing people still using mobile phones whilst driving, drivers not paying enough attention on the road ahead the list goes on.everywhere you go drivers/riders seem to in such a hurry to get somewhere, and don't get me started with drivers and roundabouts.the roads a dangerous place to be i think every driver/rider should advance their driving skills and the rules of the road in fact it should become law.

although i acknowledge the previous comments i would like to add that in many cases yes the rider/driver may be at fault but in my recent experience the pedestrian was at fault and unfortunately the law does not see them as responsible in road law at the present time!!!!! This family is grieving and will do for many many years to come and for that I am in the position to say through experience it does not get easier although i wish it did, leave this lovely family to grieve and treasure what they had, love to the family now and always.xxx

agree totally. also, what is with the picture of the woman + teen daughter + 2 friends? is this necessary? are there some people that really will use ANY opportunity to get their face in the paper? or is the echo turning into heat mag? this type of reporting is incredibly disrespectful in my humble opinion. rip lad

I total agree with what you said. I am the person in that photo. Arron from the echo came and called and wanted to talk to me about what happened.my understanding from Arron was that dorset council was offering free driver awerness courses for people and becouse my son was hit by a car and of course what happened i thought it would be a good idea...and he told me he would not put in details like he did becouse i did not want the lads family reading it. I could not belive it when i read it.. i have not slept from this lot started. and can saftly say i would never buy the echo again. it has taught me a very big lesson never trust a news papper again. i feel so sad for this young lads family and friends, i do feel your pain and angwish....rip
