A BRIDE and groom found the perfect plaice for a wedding.
Shereene and Roger Harvey were married in the sight of cod at The Guildhall in Weymouth yesterday afternoon.
Their love did not to flounder as they crossed the River Wey to their reception in Bennetts Waterfront fish and chip shop on Trinity Road.
The couple joined 18 family and friends for their celebratory meal of fish, chips and champagne.
Mr and Mrs Harvey proved to be the life and sole of the party and there were even the obligatory jokes about Mr Harvey being a ‘battered husband’.
While a fish and chip shop may not be the usual choice for a wedding reception, the couple said it held special significance for them.
Mr Harvey, 47, of Henstridge, said: “We met in Yeovil, near to where we live, and our first date was in Weymouth.
“We came down to the beach and fed the birds on the sea front. Then we came to this side of the harbour. It’s our favourite place, and we had fish and chips.”
He added: “Since then we have come back on many dates and we always come for fish and chips here.
“We thought it would be a nice way to remember our first date.”
The couple had been together for two years, since March 2008, and it wasn’t long before the pair were herring the sound of wedding bells.
Mrs Harvey, 48, said: “It was absolutely fantastic. It was the most emotional day ever.”
Family and friends were breaming with pride as they gathered on the quayside to fish the couple well in their new life together.
Restaurant staff at Bennetts had been preparing for the wedding all afternoon.
Manager Mary O’Dwyer said the couple had wanted something low key, just for them, but had been surprised when she first heard about their idea.
She said: “I have worked here for 20 years and we have never had a wedding reception here before.”
Staff Sarah Foster and Kara Bennington had been organising the room and preparing the champagne.
Miss Bennington said: “It was a good afternoon and they were really chilled out people.
“It’s different for a reception, but for them it’s really nice because it’s where they had their first date.”
The pair spent their wedding night in the Rembrant Hotel on Dorchester Road and will be flying to the Dominican Republic for their honeymoon next week.
