Hunt for owner of abused dog abandoned on Portland

THE hunt is on for a pet owner who abandoned their dog with a flea infestation, cuts on his face and cataracts.

The 13 year-old male collie cross called Nessun, was found on the Verne on Portland at 3pm on Monday, August 23.

The dog team at Weymouth and Portland Borough Council received a call from a man saying he had found an abandoned dog running around in the area.

When they turned up to collect it, the man, described as a skinhead, left. Nessun was taken to Weymouth Pound and was checked over by a vet.

He was found to have a severe flea infestation and he has lost most of the hair from his lower back to his tail. He suffers with cataracts, is almost deaf and his coat was matted and hanging off.

The dog team believes that he had been wearing a muzzle for a long time as he had deep cuts below both of his eyes where the device had been rubbing.

Nessun had a microchip to identify him and the vets had hoped to trace his owners through it but it was found that his last registered owners were an elderly couple on Portland.

After the death of one of his owners, he was given a new home.

Dog Warden Ian Lewis is putting out an appeal to find the person responsible for Nessun’s condition.

Mr Lewis described Nessun’s treatment as ‘one of the worst cases we have seen’.

He said: “He’s 13 years old so he is quite old, and to be treated like that is very wrong.

“He was infested with fleas and his nails were long, so he hadn’t been walked. It’s very sad.”

He added: “We want the owner to come forward so that we can do something about it.

“We have been treating him, but he’s going to need a lot more care. It could be as much as £700 to get him back in shape.

“The vet said he’s not in bad shape considering how old he is and when he is better he will make a lovely dog for an older person.”

Nessun is now recovering from his ordeal at Woodlands Farm Kennels in Bridport.

The dog team are putting out an appeal for anyone with information about Nessun or his owner to call Ian Lewis on 01305 838432.

Makes you sick!
I hope the owenermis ashamed of himself! But probably not!
Must of been a much loved pet,of his previous older owners. Then some looser took over, and mistreated him!
If anybody know's of the person who was ''looking after'' Nessun, then come forward.
Hope he feels better soon, and is given a loving home.

A lot of people dont realise how much it can cost to keep pets, the bills soon mount up and vets dont come cheap, especially with ongoing problems like flea infestations.
On a quick Google search have found that the PDSA can help people on housing benefit or job-seekers allowance, and the relevant practices are apparently Fielding and Cumber and Castle in Dorchester.
This may be of interest to others who cant cope with the bills and are thinking of abandoning their pet. No excuse of course for keeping a muzzle on the poor thing all the time and not seeking help sooner.
On a sort of a positive note, if the 'skinhead' who reported it was the owner, at least he did the right thing at last by contacting the authorities.
PLEASE someone give this poor dog a home, I work allday so cant but I am sure there is a hero/heroine out there somewhere.

Unfortunately this is becoming more and more common, not only on Portland but throughout Dorset,my son has taken two Resuce Dogs this year, a Jack Russel X Staffordshire Terrier who was about 2 years old and an 8 month old Staffie X Mastiff, both dogs were horriffically abused by previous owners. in fact the Staffie X Mastiff a **** was thrown from a speeding car outside a recue centre near Blandford. Also at the same time er father was thrown out as well. She had horrendous injuries that required £££££££'s spent at the vets. Both dogs are now well behaved and have even learnt new things , they are both loved and well looked after and I think happy in their new found homes

Hopefully Nessun will be as lucky next time round, hope he finds an owner as caring as your son. I would like to see much stiffer sentences for animal cruelty, banned from having animals for life just a starter.

people make me sick, animals get a pretty poor deal and if i could i would take in all abandoned/neglected animals and give them a loving home,i hope that the dog warden and the police find the cruel..........that did this and mistreat him, show him no remorse and then i would cheer!!!!

There is absolutely no excuse for treating another living creature like this. If you can't afford to keep an animal don't get one. If you already have one and find yourself unable to care for it properly, hand it in to a rescue centre. Looking after an animal can be expensive and some of us prioritise their care before the luxury of cigarettes and booze. Far too many people however seem to find the money for the fags and the drink and then bleat that they can't afford to look after what they should be looking after. When will we as a society acknowledge that we are far too soft on the credins who do this type of thing and punish them properly.

I wonder how many people who think these high profile cases are cruel, then go on and eat battery hens eggs and KFC?

how stupid it is not to think this dog hasnt been living wild for a long time
this could well be a holiday familys pet dog which was lost
how does anyone know its been mistreated
like the man decribed as a skin head is offensive
