A PIECE of Weymouth history will be up for grabs as items from a visitor attraction go under the hammer.

With Brewers Quay closing its doors for redevelopment last month, a number of weird and wonderful exhibits from the visitor attraction are being sold at auction in Dorchester.

Fibreglass horses, a classic red telephone box, full-sized cannons and life-size figures will be among the lots on the sale at Duke’s Auctioneers Grove saleroom on Tuesday, March 22.

The former brewery site, which had been operating as a visitor attraction for 20 years, closed its doors to the public on February 4.

The building is now awaiting major regeneration that will see an 85-bed hotel, residential apartments, shops, restaurants and a new home for Weymouth Museum.

During the development phase the Weymouth Museum will relocate across the harbour to the ferry terminal building and reopen to visitors in July but a number of items from the attraction will not be making the journey and will be going up for sale at the auction.

Duke’s auctioneer Matthew Denney said: “I suspect a lot of people from Weymouth will be interested because it’s local stuff and local history and people worked there or were familiar with the site might want some mementos from it.

“Otherwise it’s all good collectable stuff and some very unusual bits and pieces.”

One of the most appealing items of the sale is likely to be a full sized model of a red telephone box from 1935, which is expected to fetch between £400 and £800 at the auction.

Mr Denney said: “The phone box is great because it’s in really good condition as it has been indoors for quite a long time.

“The horses are also quite fun, very realistic and life like.”

Mr Denney said the 170 lots include plenty of ornamental items that should appeal to a wide range of tastes and budgets.

He said: “There’s nothing particularly valuable. It’s decorative stuff like lobster pots, barrels and that sort of thing.

“It’s all good fun and it’s a bit of Weymouth history.

“It has been a visitor attraction for a long time so quite a lot of people associate with it and can pick themselves up a souvenir.”

The 170 lots from Brewers Quay will form the first part of Duke’s Grove auction on Tuesday, March 22, which starts at 10.30am.

Viewing is available from 9am to 12noon on Saturday and from 9.30am to 7pm on Monda.
