VISITORS have been heading to Dorset County Museum to check out the fossilised skull of a giant marine reptile.
The pliosaur fossil attracted widescale media attention when it was unveiled on Friday by renowned natural history film-maker Sir David Attenborough.
The exhibition featuring the skull of the 155million-year-old beast was opened to the public on Saturday and the museum was open specially on Sunday.
A Dorset County Museum spokesman said yesterday: “Visitor numbers were much better than normal on Saturday and we had quite a good day.
“Already this morning there has been quite a stream of people coming in – it’s promising.”
The museum is hoping the historic exhibit will bring in visitors from far afield and has already fielded enquiries from around the country and abroad from people wanting to come and see the pliosaur.
The spokesman added: “It’s great for Dorset and hopefully it will just build and build.”
The museum is open from 10am to 5pm from Monday to Saturday.
