COUNCILLORS have backed moves for the Bridport Community Orchard Group to take over another plot of land.
Members of Bridport Town Council’s finance and general purposes committee gave their agreement for the scheme on land north east of Park Road at a recent meeting.
Coun Sandra Brown said: “I am very pleased about this.
“There has always been a worry about this bit of land being built upon. This is brilliant.”
The orchard group intends to plant trees and wild flowers on the plot just before the entrance to the Allington Hill Woodland Trust reserve.
The group is proposing to call the 1,200 square metre site Jubilee Meadow in honour of the Queen’s diamond jubilee.
Councillors heard that Bridport Lions had offered £500 to fund about 12 trees.
The land is owned by West Dorset District Council but is being transferred to the Bridport Town Council.
The council and orchard group would be jointly responsible for the management of the plot.
