LEISURE chiefs are preparing for a year of fun, excitement and celebration.

Launching Weymouth and Portland Borough Council’s 2012 festivals and events programme for 2012, representatives say the area’s reputation for hosting quality events will be further enhanced this year.

The programme, which is sponsored by the Riviera Hotel, is packed full with more than 200 events ranging from international festivals, sporting championships, markets, art events and family activities.

The year will be remembered for the London 2012 Olympics and Weymouth and Portland will be proudly playing its part by hosting the sailing events.

Olympic-themed spectacles include the Maritime Mix encompassing world-class outdoor theatre, open-air mass performances, visual arts, multi media arts festivals, panoramic video projections and music and dance celebrations.

The council’s cultural, tourism and community facilities spokesman Andy Blackwood said: “The festivals and events programme is a great success and reflects the commitment, creativity and inspiration of the people of the borough and the many supporting businesses and local organisations.

“I am delighted to have the opportunity to welcome the Riviera Hotel onboard as the title sponsor and launch this year’s programme and look forward to supporting a memorable year in the resort.”

Other highlights this year include Weymouth’s Big Beach Weekend featuring the high-flying International Beach Kite Festival, Armed Forces Day celebrations, international fireworks and the Spirit of the Sea Festival.

Sport will once again be a major feature through the year with hockey and squash festivals plus tag rugby, beach soccer and volleyball and the Lions Beach Motocross.

The year also promises to be an incredibly active one for Weymouth and Portland with numerous walks, runs, swims and multi discipline events for all standards and ambitions.

Riviera Hotel genral manager Kevin Bungay said: “The Riviera Hotel has been a landmark on the Weymouth coastline for over 75 years.

“We are delighted to be main sponsors of the Weymouth and Portland events in 2012 and look forward to welcome local, national and international visitors and guests.”
