Weymouth and Dorchester Parkinson's UK raise £15,000 for research

FUNDRAISERS are hoping that a cure for Parkinson’s Disease is a step closer after raising more than £15,000 for research.

Weymouth and Dorchester’s branch of Parkinson’s UK decided to support a groundbreaking project looking at the disease.

Branch treasurer Mark Vagg said: “This is money we have raised all throughout the year with a number of activities, membership and sadly, money that is left in memoriam.

“This year we decided to invest the funds into research of the disease.

“It is really motivating to be able to help researchers understand the causes of Parkinson’s, improve treatments and work towards finding a cure.”

Every hour in the UK, someone is diagnosed with Parkinson’s and the charity has so far invested more than £50million into research of the disease.

It is hoped that this figure will reach £75million by 2014.

Mark added: “It’s very important that research on the disease is carried out, it’s the only way we will ever get a cure.”
