PUPILS at Damers First School are helping hospital patients celebrate a special day by making decorations.

The youngsters spent the day making Royal bunting with local artist Sarah Butterworth to hang at Dorset County Hospital to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee next month.

They also had a visit from a heart specialist. Class teacher Naomi Hudson said: “We wanted someone to come and talk to the children about the importance of keeping their heart healthy, and we also wanted to get them thinking about their local community.”

The day-long workshop saw children aged between four and nine helping to make bunting in red, white and blue colours.

Miss Hudson said: “I think it’s important for the children to work with artists and other members of the community, who have skills that we, as teachers, might not necessarily have.

“We also wanted to teach the children how they can get involved in their community and hopefully the bunting will help to liven up the patients’ day a little.”

The theme of the bunting was Queen of Hearts, to incorporate the Jubilee celebrations and to teach children about heart health.
