A MAN who secretly filmed a teenage girl in the shower has received a community order.

Nigel Anthony Hamilton Smith, aged 54, appeared at Dorchester Crown Court to be sentenced after admitting to two charges of voyeurism and three offences of possessing indecent images of children.

Nicholas Tucker, prosecuting, told the court that on July 1 last year the 14-year-old girl was in the shower when she noticed an after shave box which had a ‘suspicious looking hole’ in it.

She discovered that the defendant’s mobile phone had been inserted into the box and it was apparent it was filming her in the shower.

Mr Tucker said the shocked girl deleted the footage but also found a further video from the day before of her lying on the sofa fully clothed that she was unaware had been taken.

Smith, of Northmoor Way, Wareham, was arrested soon after and the police found three indecent images of naked children on his mobile phone.

Mr Tucker said pictures were of the lowest grade, level one, in the categories for indecent images.

The court was told that Smith, who was a serving prison officer at the time, was a man of previous good character.

Judge Roger Jarvis imposed a three-year community order with a supervision requirement and a requirement to attend a sex offenders’ group work programme.

He told the defendant: “What you did so far as this voyeurism is concerned was frankly a disgustingly shabby thing to do.

“These sorts of things stay with victims for a long time, particularly when the victim is a young child.

“She was 40 years younger than you.

“I believe you are ashamed of yourself and so you should be.”

Smith was also made subject to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order until further notice and was placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for a period of five years.
