A CLUB helping people with learning disabilities make friends in the community has said thank you to people who have offered it support.

The Friendship Club, which helps adults with learning difficulties go out and enjoy new experiences, held an awards night to recognise those who have gone above and beyond to help the organisation.

The ceremony took place at the New Vic in Weymouth and was followed by a disco.

The Friendship Club is part of People First Dorset and has been chosen by Mayor of Weymouth and Portland Kate Wheller as her mayoral charity.

It arranges events and other ways to help people with learning disabilities meet new people and enjoy other things most of us take for granted.

Supporters, volunteers, members and their families came together to enjoy the awards night.

Parent Liz Hardiman described it as a ‘lovely, happy and rewarding evening’ with ‘so much joy in the room’.

She added: “I’m so proud of my son and all his friends.”

Laura Kerr, pictured above, who runs the club, said: “We felt it was important to publicly acknowledge some of our incredible volunteers and thank them.

“The club would not happen without their support and we wanted to show our appreciation for all their time, hard work and loyalty.”

The awards were giving out to volunteers who have consistently supported the Friendship Club events as well as venues that have given support and even the printers who have been supportive of the club.

There was also recognition for members and friends who have raised vital funds for the group.

Laura said: “There are many others who have given the club support but we had to narrow it down, of only for time constraints.

“On this occasion we have focused on those who have consistently given support or gone over and above to raise money recently.

“We hope to do another one next year to encourage more people to fundraise and win an award so if we have forgotten anyone this time please let us know so we can be sure to thank you next time.”
