A VALUABLE community garden in Dorchester which sat empty and overgrown for more than a year has been revived.

The former Whitfield Rural Activity Centre for people with mental health problems was temporarily closed by the NHS in 2013 and had been falling into disrepair.

Now Futureroots, a not-for-profit organisation, has refurbished the site as a hub for the community, and officially launched the new facility at a celebratory open day.

Mayor of Dorchester Peter Mann officially opened the centre by cutting the ribbon, and there were talks from people who benefited from Futureroots’ past projects as well as demonstrations of what the service will offer.

The Whitfield site, located off Poundbury Road, will offer a range of activities including gardening, arts, crafts and cookery for troubled youngsters, young parents, people with mental health issues, ex-offenders and older people.

Futureroots aims to work with local schools, charities like the Alzheimer’s Society and organisations such as the Dorchester Learning Centre and the Compass Centre in Weymouth.

Julie Plumley, director of Futureroots, said: “The day would not have been such a success without all the help from the wonderful Whitfield Volun-teers, both young and old.

“We would like to thank all the local businesses who have supported Whitfield by donating goods or time. Future-roots at Whit-field will continue to grow and develop offering support to people of all ages who need extra resilience to cope with life challenges and transitions.” Several businesses have already given their support to the project including Wessex Group, Carpets Select, B&Q, Wilkinsons, Bradfords, Travis Perkins, Value House, Gavin Catering, Sun-flowers, Dorset Cereals and Castle Gardens.

Synergy Housing also made a toolkit investment that will allow Futureroots to pilot a practical and therapeutic outdoor programme for their residents who are unemployed and face barriers to finding work.

The Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) has also helped out, awarding Futureroots a grant of £1,600 for garden tools for Whitfield.
