DORCHESTER'S iconic Keep Military Museum will provide the venue for a call to arms for women to join the fight against cancer.

Members of a county town fitness group will be putting on their 'war paint' and calling on fellow women to join them at the Race for Life event at Kingston Maurward on Sunday, May 31.

Lou Sams Zumba Heat group will be leading the cry to try and get thousands of mums, daughters, grans, friends and colleagues to join them in the fundraiser for Cancer Research UK.

They will be put under the spotlight on Wednesday, May 6 as the Keep Military Museum changes colour in a show of support for Race for Life.

The 5km event at Kingston Maurward is part of Cancer Research UK's series of events in partnership with Tesco that raise millions of pounds every year to help beat 200 different types of cancer.

Dorchester event organisers Maxine Bateman said: "We’re really grateful for the support from The Keep Military Museum in lighting up the building in celebration and awareness of Race for Life. It really has been a sight for all to see.

Race for Life helps to pay for the research which is making a difference and I hope The Keep will be seen as a beacon of hope for cancer patients everywhere."

Organisers are hoping to attract 1,800 participants for this year's Dorchester Race for Life and raise £85,000 for research.

Maxine added: "Taking part is also a way to get fitter and the beautiful area around Dorchester is an ideal place for women of all ages, shapes and sizes to kick-start a healthier lifestyle.

"Becoming more active has longer-term benefits, as research shows that even regular, moderate physical activity can help reduce the risk of cancer.

"Not only does it help to maintain a healthy body weight but it also has a protective effect in itself."

Free training plans for different levels of ability are available on the Race for Life website.

The training plans are designed for walkers, joggers or runners and feature guidance on warming up and stretching, as well as motivation.

Cancer survival rates have doubled since the 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress.

But more funds and more supporters are needed to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.
