COMMITTED cyclists pedalled their way to success in a cross-county charity bike challenge.

The annual Coast to Coast Challenge, which is held by the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, raised thousands of pounds.

A total of 553 cyclists took on the gruelling 54-mile ride from Watchet in Somerset to West Bay and participants included those who had been saved by the air ambulance.

There was also a shorter 11-mile route that started from Drimpton.

All ages were represented in the race, with those as young as nine taking part and those in their twilight of their lives at 76 also donning their helmets and saddling up for the charity.

The final fundraising total has not yet been announced, but the event, which was taking place for the fifth year, has been lauded as the best ever and the air ambulance hopes to exceed last year’s £60,000 total.

Matthew Norris from Bridport, Steve Toogood and Kevin Watts from Minehead were the first three cyclists to arrive in West Bay. Matthew was first to cross the finish line last year and has taken part in the event for the past four years.

Kay Joy took part for the second year as part of the Auto Bitz team. Speaking at the end of the challenge, she said: “I loved the event last year, but this year was even better because I was much fitter and have a new bike.”

Friends Helen Challis and Cindy Bodycombe from Bridport cycled the shorter route as their husbands cycled the 54 miles and said the atmosphere was amazing.

Mrs Challis said: “We never expected to be greeted with people lining the streets and hope everyone doesn’t tink we completed the 54 mile route that quickly.”

Bill Sivewright, Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance chief executive officer, also completed the 54 mile route and speaking at the finish line, he said: “Taking part in the event is a really great way to get a good perspective on the organization and running of the event. Mingling with the riders at all stages and getting right into the atmosphere was really uplifting.

“I am full of admiration for all those who pushed themselves, in some cases, well beyond their normal limits to complete the Challenge. I must also say a huge thank you to all my team; that includes staff, volunteers and those who turned out just to help us on the day.”
