A DORCHESTER recruitment firm has been going the extra mile for charity this year in celebration of its 25th anniversary.

Staff from Smart Recruitment, alongside their colleagues elsewhere in the Wise Employment group, have pledged to cycle 2,500 on a static bike to raise money for Children’s Hospice South West.

Starting at the beginning of the year, the ‘Pedalling for Precious Lives’ campaign smashed its initial £2,500 target and is now aiming to reach £5,000 before the challenge draws to a close at the end of the month.

Recruitment consultant from the High West Street branch Kelly Claxton said: "We are the seventh destination for the bike which has been travelling around our branches in Truro, Plymouth, Exeter and Yeovil before coming to Dorchester.

"We have been taking it in turns peddling the bike and have spent a day in Tesco’s, Dorchester market and a day in Weymouth town centre. We have it set up so anybody is welcome to jump on the bike and pedal a few miles or give our fastest mile challenge a go.

"The fastest mile is currently at 2m 11secs and we even have a 10-year-old girl on the leader board who did it in 2m 30secs. So far we have done 1,300 miles and we will keep pedalling until we reach our target."

The target mileage equates to three times round the firms branch network including pit-stops at the three children’s hospices, Little Harbour and Little Bridge House in Devon and Charlton Farm in Bristol.

As a charity, Children's Hospice South West provide hospice care for children with life-limiting conditions and their families including respite care, short breaks and end of life support.

Kelly said: "The children’s hospice and our firm were both founded by a husband and wife team and are both celebrating 25th anniversaries this year so it was a really nice fit.

"The fundraising doesn’t stop with the bike challenge, we are doing charitable fundraising all year which will all be donated to the children’s hospice."
