FOLLOW in the footsteps of two of Dorset’s favourite sons and keen cyclists.

This May Day (1) bike fans can get out and about in the fresh air and take advantage of the beautiful countryside of Dorset.

The Cycling UK/CTC West Dorset group have organised the event to put the pedal down and enjoy the countryside in the Two Hardy’s Bike Ride.

The ride will celebrate Admiral Hardy – for whom the Hardy Monument is named and the author and poet Thomas Hardy – himself a famous cyclist, who loved to explore the countryside of his novels.

The ride on Bank Holiday Monday will start at 10am at the Top O’ Town car park in the centre of the county town. The ride will then travel around the area for around 20-25 miles and include a stop for lunch in Portesham. The lunch will be provided. The route will pass Admiral Hardy’s Monument and Thomas Hardy’s Cottage on the 25-mile route and his Max Gate home on the 20-mile route – with an opportunity to visit each one.

There will be brief talks about both Hardys at lunch time so riders can learn more about these famous Dorset men.

The ride will finish at the Top O’ Town car park at about 5pm and there will be prizes for a simple quiz based on what riders learnt during their day.

The event costs £5 per adult and £15 per family – entrance to National trust properties will be in addition to this charge.
