A simple family fun day has raised more than £200 for two vital charities - with money still coming in.

Brewery Square played host to an action-packed day in the county town that saw it come alive with dance, live music and laughter.

The day, held on Saturday, June 3, and was part of a UK-wide annual charity fundraising day - One Great Day.

The initiative supports Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity and where possible, another local children's charity close to the heart of each community.

And organises of the event in Dorchester decided Butterflies, a charity that supports children with disabilities by providing specialised equipment, child development aids and training courses, should also benefit from the day.

There was a variety of children's activities including face painting and a quiz. There was also live music, market stalls, street food and activities in the square with Anytime Fitness.

Visitors also enjoyed the delights of various food producers, including Jurassic Cottage Foods serving jams, chutneys, fresh pies and cakes, as well as Street Food Market favourites such as Bubble Tea and The Emporium Pizza.

Lily Baker, 32 and from Dorchester, was at the fun day with her six-year-old daughter Jenn.

She said: "My friend told me about today and since the weather is so lovely we thought it would be nice to come down.

"It's lovely to keep the kids entertained while raising money for important charities.

"I hope they run this again as I would definitely come back - Jenn has had a great day."

One Great Day was established in 2014 and has so far raised more £230,000 for more than 50 different children's charities and 2017 will see more 150 shopping centres take part.

The event has raised more than £250 so far, with donations still coming in from local companies.

Charlotte Spracklen, centre manager at Brewery Square, said: "We’re thrilled with the success of the event – it was great to see so many people in the Square raising money for two excellent causes. Anytime Fitness hosted some great fitness sessions for everyone to get involved with and everyone came out to enjoy the sunshine, music and performances.”
