A woman and her brother shaved their heads to show support for their parents who have been diagnosed with cancer.

Debbie Schilling, 51, and Karl Coleman, 39, braved the shave for Macmillan Cancer Support on Saturday at the Junction Hotel in Dorchester.

The pair managed to raise around £700 for the charity, which helps to support people living with cancer.

Debbie said she was surprised to have raised so much money.

She added: “It went absolutely brilliantly, we had a lot of support at the event.

“There were some nerve-racking moments.”

“I am very pleased with how much we have raised, I didn’t expect to raise that much. The people at the Junction Hotel were there eating food or watching the football at the time. I don’t think half of them expected us to do something like this, but they were putting money in the pot regardless.

"I would like to give a great big thank you to Albert and all his staff at the Junction Hotel who made the event possible."

Debbie explained that she decided to brave the shave after her mum was diagnosed with cancer around a month ago.

She said: “When I first heard mum had been diagnosed I said to Karl I’m thinking of braving the shave for Macmillan and he said that’s a great idea. Then the next time I spoke to him he had ordered all the sponsorship forms and said he had spoken to Macmillan. I didn’t think we would be doing it this quickly.

She joked: “I was actually trying to get my brother to wait until it gets a bit warmer, but he said we have got to do it now.”

Debbie’s dad was diagnosed with cancer around five years ago and is expected to receive the all clear in February.

Debbie said: “There was a lot of emotion on the day of the shave. My mum didn’t come because she was working, and I don’t think she could stand and watch us have it done. My dad came to it and he was very emotional. Me and my brother had a bit of a cry and I think mum and dad did afterwards.”
