Efforts to provide world-class cancer care in Dorchester are a step closer, thanks to another generous donation.

The Cancer Appeal received a further boost recently following a donation by the Oddfellows Friendly Society.

The cheque presentation in Martinstown was attended by Dorset County Hospital Charity chairman, Peter Greensmith and representatives of other local charities.

During the evening a dozen donations of £200 were awarded to local charities and good causes.

The Cancer Appeal was singled out by this year’s chairman, John Bates, to receive a special award of £1,270.

Mr Greensmith said: “This generous donation will help us to fund the Outpatients department which is being built above the new Radiotherapy unit at Dorset County Hospital.

"It will also support the refurbishment of the existing Chemotherapy suite in the Hospital. Our aim is to provide our patients with world-class cancer care right here in Dorchester.”

Simon Pearson, head of fundraising added: “We would like to thank the Oddfellows for their generosity in supporting the Cancer Appeal and in particular the chairman, John Bates for selecting us for his special award – the money will go towards state-of-the-art outpatient facilities and improvements in our chemotherapy unit.”

The Oddfellows is a national organisation with roots dating back to 1810 – its Dorchester branch makes a number of donations to local charities each year.

At the presentation in December the Fortuneswell Cancer Trust, who are also supporting the Cancer Appeal, received a cheque for £200.

Dorset County Hospital Charity would like to thank Mr Bates and all the members of the Dorchester Oddfellows for their generous donation.

At the start of this New Year, the Charity would also like to thank everyone who has supported the Cancer Appeal over the last 12 months - particularly the Fortuneswell Cancer Trust and the Friends of Dorset County Hospital as well as many other Trusts and Foundations and local companies.

The Appeal is funding a Cancer and Haematology Outpatients Department which is being built on top of the new Radiotherapy Unit at the Hospital. When complete, the project will bring radiotherapy services to Dorchester for the first time.
