Blooming marvellous – hundreds of daffodils are in Dorchester's Borough Gardens.

Local people sponsored the bulbs which were first planted near the Princes Street entrance two years ago to raise money for cancer charity, Marie Curie.

Since then more bulbs have been added, sponsored by Goulds Garden Centre, and dug in by volunteers from the local fundraising group and Town Council garden staff.

At this time of year group members are out most weekends and on some days during the week selling daffodil lapel badges. A collection in South Street at the end of March resulted in more than £1,000 being raise.

Since being formed just over three years ago the Dorchester and District Fundraising group have raised around £100,000 to support the work of more than a hundred Marie Curie specialist cancer nurses who work across Dorset.

Additional volunteers are welcome to support the group with its fund-raising. Apart from street collections the helpers have in the past organised special events, including an 'open day' at Minterne House.

The local group has just set up its own Facebook page where more information can be found, or they can be contacted via email to the regional office at -somersetdorsetfundraising@mariecurie.org.uk
