A new policy is coming into effect regarding pregnancy ultrasound scans at Dorset County Hospital.

From Monday, July 2 only one adult will be able to accompany a pregnant women for her ultrasound scan.

Antenatal ultrasound scans are used to evaluate the health of the patient's baby and the progress of their pregnancy.

A spokesman for DCH said: "It is extremely important that our staff are able to concentrate and perform all aspects of this test without distraction. Therefore, only one accompanying adult may attend the scan and no children under 16 will be permitted. Photos and videos are not allowed during the scan.

"Please ensure you arrange appropriate childcare for your scan as no exceptions can be made on the day.

"We do understand that our policy may be inconvenient but ultrasound scans are important medical examinations and should be treated in the same way as any other hospital investigation. The health of your baby is our priority.

"You will be able to get a print out of your scans so please ask the staff about that during your visit.

"If you need to rearrange your appointment please contact the scan department as soon as possible on 01305 254530."
