Fundraisers were out in force to help bring cancer services to Dorset.

Poundbury-based cancer support group, GO Girls! headed to this year's Uplyme Village Fete to help raise £50,000 for Dorset County Hospital's Cancer Appeal.

Beth Gillan, 43, from Lyme Regis was diagnosed with ovarian cancer last year.

She headed to the fete with an army of supporters to help the GO Girls! raise awareness of ovarian cancer.

"It is vital we make women aware of the symptoms of ovarian cancer. Being body aware, could lead to earlier diagnosis and I am passionate about helping the GO Girls! raise awareness of all gynaecological cancers . We really must start talking about this stuff - shying away from it simply won't help", said Beth.

During the fete, the GO Girls! who support women with gynaecological cancers, raised £466.

The GO Girls! sold cake, raffled a luxury hamper and hosted a 'Beat the Goalie' event which the GO Girls! said proved very popular.

A recent study by charity, Target Ovarian Cancer recent emphasised the need for family and friends of cancer patients to receive appropriate support and counselling.

Beth's husband, Steve Gillan said: "I can testify how the impact of a diagnosis of ovarian cancer impacted on me and our children. To have the support of GO Girls! really has helped - I would encourage anyone with a gynaecological cancer to receive the advice, support and hugs GO Girls so freely give - it made a massive difference to us."

Teresa Wolff, vice chair of GO Girls! said: "We just have over £3,000 to go before we reach our £50,000 target. We were doing so well with our fundraising, we agreed to extend our original £25,000 target to fund a complete GO Girls! consulting room. We are so excited to have contributed to such an incredible community project."

Beth and her team are planning a further huge fundraiser on July 15 with the Cap to Coast Challenge.
