Remembrance Sunday last week got us thinking about the world in general. The world is a brilliant place and we are blessed as it gives us the tools for most of us to live our lives well.

But here’s the thing, it gives us all this, yet there’s still so much starvation, bloodshed and suffering.

We are lucky. Most of us in Dorset have our basic needs met. However, on the news we see terrible things happening to this beautiful world and people living in it. It reminds us both not to grumble and be grateful for what we have.

When we watch the news and see terrible things happening, like the plane crash and chaos in Sharm el-Sheikh, we often feel overwhelmed with negative feelings and have to switch off. Other times the news can be so complicated to understand, it makes our heads hurt!

We’ve been thinking about what we can do to help, and believe some problems have become so deep rooted and terrible that solving them would be like trying to tiptoe barefoot up Ben Nevis.

However, after talking more, we realised there are some small things we can do. Both of us recycle. We nearly always take public transport or walk. We try not to waste food, though this isn’t always good for our waistlines! We also donate to charity and volunteer.

We’d love to know what you think, or how you help?

But over and above everything, we believe there’s one thing essential to improving the world and that’s our attitude to life. We’d like to talk about attitudes another day because we think it needs a whole column to itself. But for now, we are off to see Spectre, so tune in next week, and we’ll let you know if James Bond has managed to save the planet!
