A PORTLAND charity is celebrating a fantastic year of helping older people.

Island Community Action organisers say they have had a great year and 2013 saw them support older people on the island to enjoy 933 meals and provide 392 home visits, offering companionship to some of the Island’s most isolated people.

The group also completed 352 journeys in their volunteer car, helping older people to get to medical appointments, essential services and social occasions.

They also delivered 46 gentle seated exercise classes to 24 people with mobility problems to support their movement, helping to prevent trips and falls.

They will be holding an event to celebrate the island’s older people on Sunday, October 5.

Silver Sunday already has a full guest list of older people, and people will be treated to singing, performances and tea and cakes.

The charity is currently looking for volunteer drivers to help get older people to the shops and doctors.

If you can donate a little of your time to volunteer as a driver, and you have a clean licence, please get in contact on 01305 823789.
