PORTLAND Port has welcomed a huge visitor to its dock.

MS Albatros, an 812-passenger cruise ship, paid a visit to the port.

The 28,518 tonne vessel, operated by German travel agency Phoenix Reisen, is 205m long and has ten decks.

Built in Finland in 1973, The Albatros was initially called Royal Viking Sea and has sailed under the names Royal Odyssey, Norwegian Star, Norwegian Star 1 and Crown.

She docked at the port on Saturday before heading to Dover.

The visit provided a boost for Portland, which has seen a huge number of cruise ships and visitors this year, bringing an economic boost to Weymouth, Portland and the rest of Dorset.

Since May, a total of 9,404 visitors have arrived at Portland Port off a host of different ships including MS Artania, also operated by Phoenix Reisen, which brought 1,200 passengers to the port.

Speaking of the port’s popularity, Weymouth and Portland Chamber of Commerce president, Michelle Hind, said last month: “This is fantastic news for Weymouth and Portland.”
