PORTLAND is 'punching above its weight' as an emerging Easter holiday hotspot, according to a leading UK travel site.

According to recent statistics from holidaylettings.co.uk, the UK’s leading holiday rental website and a TripAdvisor company, the Isle of Portland has made it into the top five emerging hotspots in the UK for Easter getaways.

Mayor of Portland, Cllr Sandy West, says the island has everything to offer.

She said: "Portland is an absolutely fantastic island.

"The D Day Museum has just opened in Castletown which is absolutely fantastic.

"Families can than grab a bite to eat and a drink at The Boat That Rocks.

"We have the Sailing Academy where the Olympics were held, Chesil Beach and Chesil Cove.

"Fancy's Farm is a fantastic place for families, it's really interactive.

"The Sculpture Park is a hidden gem. It's free and it is the most beautiful, fascinating place where the kids can run around.

"The Portland Museum is another hidden gem.

"St George's Church is 250 years old. It is stunning inside and there are great volunteers there who can help you with information.

"Obviously the scenery at Portland Bill is spectacular.

"There are countless walks people can do on the island too - there is something for the young and the older generations.

"I am so delighted that at last Portland is getting some recognition that we are more than just a quick trip out to Portland Bill."

Saskia Welman, spokesperson for holidaylettings.co.uk, says the list shows holidaymakers are opting to spend their Easter break and precious bank holidays in picturesque coastal locations ahead of bustling cities.

She said: "Eight out of the top 10 destinations are on the coast, so it seems holidaymakers are craving a taste of the seaside ahead of the summer. The Isle of Portland is really punching above its weight, finishing ahead of popular holiday spots like Dartmouth and Brixham.”

Many of the locations on Holiday Lettings’ list are traditionally popular spots in the summertime. But this most recent analysis shows low-season demand is increasing, too.

Saskia added: “More and more guests are choosing holiday homes over traditional hotels because of the space, facilities, privacy and incredible value they offer.

“And as demand increases, owners are generating extra income by renting out their homes with us.”
